What is the Namibia WAO Program?

The Namibia Wildlife Aerial Observatory (WAO) program is,

  • A joint engineering-animal science initiative using drones and other technology to support wildlife conservation in Southern Africa.
  • An immersive, field-research intensive study-abroad and research program lasting 5 weeks.
  • An opportunity to design and fly drones, study African wildlife, conduct hands-on conservation and anti-poaching research, and experience living, eating, and working in Namibia with other NC State students.

During our program students will,

  • Live and work at the N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary in rural Namibia, outside the capital city.
  • Operate, fly, and help build multi-rotor & fixed wing drones.
  • Learn navigational skills, participate in live animal surveys, and conduct anti-poaching operations with trained anti-poaching & K9 units.
  • Volunteer on ecotourism projects including carnivore feeding, animal enrichment, baboon walks, and coordinated game counts.
  • Live off-the-grid in a close-knit community and communalistic culture.
  • Spend your semester outside, away from the classroom, up close and personal, with some of Africa’s most majestic animals!
